The wasps have been c-r-a-z-y around here lately! It always happens at the end of summer. Our friend, Joe, was in town and noticing how the wasps chase the hummingbirds away from the feeder. They have been pretty aggressive for some time now. He said, “Why don’t you make a wasp trap?” He said this like it was simple and something everyone knows how to do. Maybe a lot of you do know how to do it, but I didn’t. So, he explained how to do it said to take a two liter pop bottle. I didn’t have one, so I used a water bottle and lo and behold, it works like a charm!
You will need:
– Empty plastic bottle (water bottle, pop bottle, etc.)
– Scissors
– Sugar
– Water

Directions:
1. Cut the top of the bottle off. You want to cut maybe one quarter of the way down, from the opening end. Do it by creating a hole and then cutting around.
2. Invert the end you just cut off and stick it back in the bottle. If you don’t have a tight fit, you can add tape. The water bottle I used fit nice and snug, I didn’t need any tape.
3. Make syrup. This is the same recipe I use for the hummingbirds.
Take one part sugar and two parts water. Bring to a boil on the stove (mixing occasionally). Once it’s boiling, remove from heat an allow to cool.
4. Pour a small amount of the syrup into the bottom of the bottle. Any remaining syrup can be put in a container and refrigerated for use at a later date.
5. Set the trap outside! When it is full, dispose of the wasps. Make sure there aren’t any live ones in there when you open it up!
