Apple Bars ~ In the Kitchen with Mona and Greg

Greg and I are back in the kitchen.  Today we are making Apple Bars, which are perfect for fall, or really any time of year!

Here is a quickie video to see exactly how we made them:

*This recipe makes two dozen
Crust Ingredients:
– 2 cups of all-purpose flour
– 2/3 cup of sugar
– 1 cup butter (softened)

Filling Ingredients:
– 2/3 cup of sugar
– 4 tablespoons all-purpose flour
– 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
– 3 cups tart cooking apples (granny smith) – peeled and thinly sliced (You need at least three, I like to buy a 4th as a spare, just incase)

Crumb Topping Ingredients:
– 2 and 2/3 cups all-purpose flour
– 2 cups packed brown sugar
– 1 cup butter (softened)
This is what you have to look forward to!

Crust Directions:
1.  Heat oven to 350 degrees.

2.  Mix 2 cups of flower and 2/3 cup of sugar in a medium/large mixing bowl.  Mix in the butter.  I use a mixer, but you can use your hands, but it does get messy!  Mix until it gets crumbly.
3.  Press the mixture into a baking pan or stone.  I like to use a baking stone that is 11″ x 16″.
4.  Bake for 25 minutes.
While the crust is baking, you can start on the filling and the crumb topping.

Filling Directions:
1.  Mix 2/3 cups of sugar, 4 tablespoons of flour and the cinnamon in a medium bowl.
2.  Stir in the sliced apples and make sure they all get coated.
Crumb Topping Directions:
1.  Mix 2 and 2/3 cups of flour, 2 cups of packed brown sugar and 1 cup of butter, until crumbly.  You can do this with a mixer, or by hand.
Once the crust is finished baking, spoon the apple filling over the crust and spread it around.

Sprinkle on the crumb topping.
Bake 35 to 40 minutes, or until the topping is light brown.  Cool completely and then cut and serve!
I like it with fresh whip cream, but Greg likes it warm and with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

It’s great either way, or just all by itself!

I hope you give it a try!

Thanks for joining us and remember:  Life’s too short not to shimmer…so don’t forget the whip cream!
