Snowball Cookie Recipe Instructions

Step 1: Preheat

oven set to bake at 400°F

Preheat the over to 400°F

Step 2: Start Mixing

White Kitchen-Aid stand mixer beating butter and adding flour

With an electric mixer, on medium speed, beat butter, 1/2 cup of powdered sugar, and vanilla in a large bowl. Stir in flour and nuts.

*I love to use my stand mixer for this recipe but a hand mixer works just as well and if you need to do it by hand, break out a wooden spoon and it’ll still be perfect.

Step 3: Dough Balls

It’s dough ball time in the snowball cookie recipe!

You are going to shape dough balls that are approximately 1 inch in size. Then, place them about one inch apart on a cookie sheet.

Step 4: Bake

Bake the snowball cookies for 8 or 9 minutes. You want them to firm up but you do not want them to brown.

Step 5: Break Out the Sugar!

rolling baked snowball cookies in powdered sugar

Once the snowball cookie batch is firm, pull them out of the oven. Immediately roll them in powdered sugar. If you let them cool, the powdered sugar won’t stick.

Then, let them cool on a wire rack and roll them in powdered sugar one last time.

A Cookie for Every Occasion

If you want to alter the look of the cookie to meet with your needs all you need to do is change the color. Think of adding a little food color to the powdered sugar before you roll the snowball cookie in it.

  • Christmas – white or a combo of red and green
  • Valentine’s Day – red
  • St Patrick’s Day – green
  • Easter – pastels (yellow, pink, purple, green, and blue)
  • Fourth of July – red, white, and blue
  • Thanksgiving – orange and green

I’m thinking of different ways I can tailor the snowball cookie to all the different holidays.

The wheels are turning!

Whether you call it a snowball cookie, a Russian Tea Cake cookie, an Italian Wedding cookie, or a Mexican Wedding cookie, it is delicious and can be changed up for holidays or simply by removing or replacing walnuts with different nuts (pecans, almonds, macadamia nuts, etc.).

I’m going to experiment with some flavor variations too!
